In an effort to re-use the million of tons of building rubble produced each year, researchers have found a way to recycle concrete with lightning.
The method, called electrodynamic fragmentation, is based on a technique developed by Russian scientists in the 1940s. Their research showed that lightning bolts of a short duration are more likely to pass through a solid. Researchers at Franuhofer are building on this approach by using lab-produced lightning bolts of an extremely short duration and directing the bolts to the concrete. As the lightning follows the path of least resistance, it separates the material into its fundamental components.
A concrete recycling plant using the lightning method could be a reality in as little as two years.
