Remote-Controlled Contraceptive Lasts Sixteen Years

Remote-Controlled Contraceptive Lasts Sixteen Years
Jul-06-14
A new remote-controlled contraceptive could allow women easier control over their reproductive choices by enabling the woman to deactivate the device without needing to visit a clinic.

Developed by MicroCHIPS, the device is meant to be implanted under the skin, where it will release a precise amount of levonorgestrel (a commonly uses contraceptive hormone) daily over the span of 16 years. The key to the device is a thin hermetic titanium and platinum seal that contains the levonorgetrel within its reservoirs and acts a bit like an electric fuse. When the device's battery sends a current through the seal, the seal melts temporarily and releases a bit of the hormone into the body. This means that when the woman is ready to conceive, she can turn off the implant with a remote control and then restart it if desired.
