Robotic Typing Hand

Robotic Typing Hand
Feb-26-11
A newly created robotic hand is able to mimic the human hand well enough to type 20 words per minute; the average human can type 33 words per minute with two hands.

Developed by researchers from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, the dexterous anthropomorphic robotic typing hand, or DART, has four joints and three degrees of freedom. The thumb adds an additional degree of freedom for manipulating small objects, although the hand was specifically designed for typing and not for grasping.

Over time the researchers plan to make further improvements to the hand to allow it to perform more diverse tasks.
