Roombots Form into Mobile Furniture on Demand

Roombots Form into Mobile Furniture on Demand
May-27-14
Designed to make life easier for the elderly or disabled, the Roombots can configure themselves into different types of furniture able to move about the house on command.

The small robotic modules were created by a team from Switzerland, who decided to apply the self-assembly and morphing abilities of today's robots to robotic furniture. The modules each contain three motors, which allow them to move in all directions, and they can attach to each other to form the desired shape, such as a chair or a table. They are able to move freely as well as along a grid of tracks, which allows the modules to travel about the room as needed—perhaps bringing a seated person closer to the window or moving the table next to the bed.
