Roost Smart Battery Lets Smoke Alarms Send Alerts

Roost Smart Battery Lets Smoke Alarms Send Alerts
Oct-26-14
Make your smoke alarm even smarter with the Roost Smart Battery, a WiFi enabled 9-volt battery that will send a notice to a smartphone if the alarm goes off.

Several new technologies to make it easier to bring home appliances online have been appearing on the market lately, and the Roost battery may be one of the simplest. The battery, developed by the startup of the same name, is equipped with a WiFi chip and sensors able to detect audio and monitor voltage. Once paired with the companion app, the battery can be identified by name (such as the room it is in) and connected to the home WiFi. The 9-volt battery then fits into the smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector, where it will alert the homeowner to an alarm or low battery power.

The company is currently working to decrease the size of the device, and is considering adding other sensors, such as an accelerometer or thermometer, that could expand the batteries capabilities.
