The open-source SafariSeat wheelchair brings a new level of independence to people in developing countries.
According to the development team, Uji, about one in every 200 people in East Africa alone are in need of a wheelchair. The SafariSeat was developed to help meet that need by offering a rugged, all-terrain, affordable wheelchair that can also be manufactured and repaired locally. The SafairSeat is made from bike parts, which are easily accessible, and can be assembled without tools. The chair is propelled by pumping a pair of levers, and the larger front wheels let the chair move more freely over obstacles.
The Uji team plans to make the blueprints for the SafariSeat open source, so they can be built by anyone.
