Safer Deicer Made from Grape Skins

Safer Deicer Made from Grape Skins
Dec-04-19
An innovative deicer made using grape skins offers an effective and less damaging alternative to road salt.

The deicing solution was created by a team from Washington State University, who broke down the waste grape skins using chemical degradation and fermentation. The process, which creates no waste, results in a compound able to melt ice faster than conventional road salt while also causing much less damage to roads, vehicles and the surrounding environment.

According to the team, the process is not confined to grape waste, and could also be applied to other forms of agricultural waste, including dandelion leaves and apple waste.
