An extract from the eggs of the axolotl salamander has been found to activate the tumor suppressor genes of cancer cells.
Scientists at the University of Nottingham developed the process of treating cancerous cells with the extract of axolotl oocytes (eggs prior to ovulation). The axolotl salamander is known for its ability to regenerate body parts, and the proteins in axolotls are very similar to those in humans. Treating the cancerous cells with the extract reactivated the tumor suppressor genes and stopped the cancer growth.
