Scab Inspired Bandage Speeds Healing

Scab Inspired Bandage Speeds Healing
Jun-04-13
Researchers have developed a wound dressing inspired by the healing properties of the scab, nature’s own bandage.

The team modeled their new ‘cytophilic’ dressing after the underside of the scab, which is covered with tiny fibers all arranged in the same direction—much like velvet. These fibers attract new cells to the wound site, which speeds healing. The team mimicked this arrangement with polyurethane nano-fiber laid out in the same pattern, designed to attract these healing cells.

In tests, the healing cells quickly attached to the membrane and arranged themselves in the same way they do on actual scabs.
