Schizophrenic Computers

Schizophrenic Computers

(2)May-11-11
Scientists have found a way to simulate schizophrenia in a computer, which could lead to a greater understanding of the condition in humans.

The team, from the University of Texas, discovered that elevated levels of dopamine can cause the brain to become overwhelmed by stimuli, and unable to put together a coherent story. The researchers taught a neural network called DISCERN, which is able to learn language, a series of stories that it stored in the same way a human stores information. When they simulated an increase in dopamine in DISCERN, which caused it to increase its rate of learning and stop forgetting, the computer began to generate random, disassociated stories.
