A face recognition technology able to identify faces in total darkness could offer a new tool for security personnel.
The technology, developed by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, relies on a computer program running a “deep neural network system.” This system, which mimics the functions of the human brain, is able to analyze different infrared images of an individual’s face and then compare them to a database images that were taken in normal daylight. In tests, the system was able to deliver up to an 80 percent accuracy rate, depending upon the number of images available for comparison.
