Seeing Ear Infections with Ultrasound

Seeing Ear Infections with Ultrasound
Aug-26-16
A new otoscope uses ultrasound to help doctors diagnose ear infections by looking through the eardrum for signs of fluid.

Developed in part by a team from MIT, the device is made to operate much like conventional otoscopes, but replaces the standard visible light with shortwave infrared. By penetrating deeper into the tissue than visible light, the infrared device allows the physician to detect fluid that can accumulate behind the eardrum—one of the main signs of an ear infection.
