Self-Healing Material Heals Extreme Damage

Self-Healing Material Heals Extreme Damage
May-24-18
A new self-healing material allows robots to keep functioning after extreme mechanical damage, including restoring electrical connections.

Developed by a team from Carnegie Mellon University, the self-repair system is based on liquid metal droplets made of a gallium-based alloy and embedded in a soft polymer. When the polymer material is damaged, the droplets will rupture to release the alloy, forming new connections to keep the electronics functioning. According to the team, the material remains conductive when stretched, which could have applications in wearable and inflatable technologies.
