Self-Healing Polymer Triggered by Water

Self-Healing Polymer Triggered by Water
Sep-03-15
A self-healing polymer triggered by water could have applications in medical implants, undersea cables and other hard-to-reach equipment.

Although other self-healing polymers have been developed, this is the first that can heal with water. The polymer, inspired by the proteins in squid teeth, is technically a copolymer made up of two parts: a structured portion comprised of amino acids and a more amorphous segment that provides the self-healing function. In tests, the team used warm water to heal a sample of the polymer and return it to its original strength.
