Self-Moisturizing Contacts

Self-Moisturizing Contacts
Jan-23-20
A self-moisturizing smart contact could make the lenses more comfortable by reducing the risk of dry eyes.

Still in the prototype phase, the contacts created by the team at Tohoku University maintain a fluid layer between the eye and the contact lens via an electroosmotic flow that forces the tears from the wearer’s own tear reservoir up over the lens. The process even pushes fluid against the surface of the lens that touches the eye. The lenses are powered by a system of tiny, biocompatible batteries, which are safe enough to be mounted on top of the lenses themselves.
