Researchers have created a “cyber expert system” that could allow prosthetic limbs to tune themselves—eliminating the need for a human’s touch.
Developed by teams from two North Carolina universities, the software-based system is designed to be built into lower-limb, powered prosthetics, where it will continuously monitor the angle of the ankle and knee joints in order to ensure a natural gait. In tests, the automatic system performed better than a human expert at setting the correct joint angles, thought it did not do as well when compensating for trunk sway.
