Sensor Detects Fire Before it Occurs

Sensor Detects Fire Before it Occurs
Nov-28-15
Sensors able to detect an electrical fire before it happens could help prevent damage to equipment and homes.

Developed by a team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the sensor detects the gases given off by heating plastic and analyzes the data with it on-board microelectronics, before smoke or flames break out. The sensors can also detect and identify other gases, such as carbon monoxide, and eliminate false positives.

According to the KIT team, the technology could also eventually be used to detect other hazards, such as gas leaks or toxic molds.
