Sensor Wirelessly Signals a Wet Diaper

Sensor Wirelessly Signals a Wet Diaper
Feb-11-14
Researchers have developed a disposable organic sensor that could alert parents and caregivers when it is time to change a wet diaper.

The flexible, integrated system was printed with inkjet technology using organic materials and is able to send information and receive its power wirelessly. While most healthcare sensors rely on silicon and other stiff materials, the new sensor is printed on a thin piece of film, and so is more comfortable to wear. And while there are diapers on the market that indicate wetness by changing color, those systems still require the caregiver to remove the person’s clothes to check. By sending a wireless alert with a range of a few inches, the electronic sensor would eliminate that necessity—which could be particularly useful for caregivers of adults.

Japan's rapidly rising population of seniors combined with its low birthrate has caused a boom in the development of devices aimed a caring for its aging population.
