The SENSUS Pain Management System offers a drug-free way for patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy to relieve chronic pain in the lower legs and feet.
Developed by NeuroMetrix, the system was recently cleared by the FDA, and is the only transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator cleared for use during sleep. It is worn just below the knee, where the push of a button will active the electrode array to deliver a higher-than-normal voltage able to overcome neuropathy-generated impedance and nerve degeneration. Each session lasts one hour, and the pain will begin to abate after 10 to 15 minutes. The SENSUS can be operated in two modes, regular and continuous, with the continuous mode starting automatically every other hour.
