A sturdy and inexpensive wave generator could be deployed in fleets to power thousands of homes.
The prototype device, called a Dielectric Elastomer Generator, is made up of a vertical cylinder with the top sealed by a rubber membrane and the bottom open to the ocean. The rubber membrane consists of layers of dielectric material, which generate a voltage as they move up and down. As waves travel past the cylinder, the changing air pressure inside causes the flexible membrane to inflate and deflate—charging and discharging to produce electricity that could be transferred to shore by underwater cables.
