By projecting the control icons onto the wearer's skin, The Skin Buttons could make operating smartwatches a bit less awkward.
A team from the Carnegie Mellon Future Interfaces Group created the proof of concept device by integrating laser projectors into the body of the watch. The low-power projectors were built from off-the-shelf materials and can be made to be touch-sensitive, which expands the watch's interaction area without needing to increase its size. The icons could also be projected as large as needed, a benefit for people with reduced vision, and can serve as alerts—projecting an icon for a text message or missed call.
