Smart Chip Detects Battery Failure

Smart Chip Detects Battery Failure
Nov-26-15
A new smart chip able to detect faulty batteries could help reduce the risk of battery fires, and their resulting damage to equipment.

While there are chips on the market able to detect when a battery is overheating, they are not able to detect battery malfunctions. To offer additional protection, and prevent dangerous fires in airplanes and electric vehicles, the team from Nanyang Technological University developed a new chip that uses a proprietary algorithm able to monitor the health and charge of the battery. According to the team, the technology can not only measure how much the battery has degraded over time, but also optimize the charging.
