"Smart Dew" Detects Intruders

"Smart Dew" Detects Intruders
Apr-01-09
Tel Aviv University has created tiny sensors as small as dew drops called "Smart Dew" which can detect almost any intruder. These sensors can be scattered outdoors on grass, rocks, sand, floors and almost any suface.

Hundreds or thousands of these small, cheap Smart Dew units can be distributed and and wirelessly networked through their on-board RF transmitters and receivers. Using the integrated controllers, they can detect the difference between a human, an animal, a truck or other machine.

Each individual "drop" can detect intruders within a radius of about 50 meters and each costs only 25 cents each. Thousands or even hundreds of thousands of the devices can be easily scattered around a large area, and because they are so small, they are extremely difficult to detect.

Each droplet can be programmed to monitor a completely different condition - Smart Dew droplets could also be programmed to detect temperature changes, carbon monoxide emissions, vibrations or light.

This is getting close to the concept of 'Spy Smoke' where the networked sensors are small enough to float on the breeze and into buildings, sending back images and sound
