A new liquid-activated smart glass can switch from clear to reflective, helping to keep interiors cool in the hot sun.
Developed by a team from the University of Delaware, the new glass stands out from other switchable glass options in that it can change to a reflective state. The glass is made up of a pair of specially textured,3D-printed plastic panels sandwiched together with a gap between them. The plastic is reflective in its normal state, but when the gap is filled with the fluid methyl salicylate, the material’s retroreflectivity is cancelled, and it becomes transparent.
