Inspired by how a simple sensor can keep a dryer from overheating, researchers are developing a 'smart skin' for aircraft that could transmit data about damage in real time.
The concept, being investigated at the BAE Systems’ Advanced Technology Centre, involves embedding small, multi-functional sensors able to sense stress, heat or damage into a 'skin' that covers the aircraft. The multitude of inexpensive sensors would be powered by a separate system, communicating wirelessly with each other and sending the gathered data to a remote operator in real-time. This access to information would enable crews to discover minor flaws before they become larger.
