Smart Stent Detects Narrowing Arteries

Smart Stent Detects Narrowing Arteries
Jun-21-18
A smart stent that senses changes in arterial blood flow could offer an early warning for heart attacks.

Stents are commonly implanted to treat heart disease, but the stent itself can cause difficulties if the tissue grows around it and causes the artery to narrow again, a condition called restenosis. The smart stent developed by the team from Colorado State helps address this risk with a combination of a superomniphobic surface and a tiny sensor that continuously tracks blood flow. If the sensor detects the early signs of restenosis, it will trigger an alert to the patient or doctor so the condition can be addressed before it worsens.
