Smart tattoos could function as early warning alerts for disease or sun exposure.
The smart tattoos were created by a team from the University of Colorado Boulder by filling microcapsules with a specialized dye. The tiny capsules can be injected into the interstitial fluid using standard tattoo artist needles, where the dye will respond to changes in the body by altering color. For example, a tattoo could signal sun exposure amounts as it changes in response to UV light, or indicate blood alcohol or glucose levels.
