Smarter Automatic Doors Let You Run Through Them

Smarter Automatic Doors Let You Run Through Them
Jun-20-14
A new automatic door system can detect who plans to walk through the doors and how fast the person is moving.

The doors are equipped with a "3D time-of-flight laser scanner" (similar to a Kinect sensor) paired with computer vision algorithms. This combination of technology allows the door to sense how many people are moving toward it, how fast they are moving, and which one of them, if any, intends to actually use the door. For example, the doors will open faster it they detect someone running for them, or will open wider to accommodate a large group of people.

The sensor has also been designed to operate in a wide range of lighting, from direct sun to full darkness, and the computer software can compensate for interference from bad weather.
