Smartphone-Controlled Insulin Dispensing Cells

Smartphone-Controlled Insulin Dispensing Cells
Apr-30-17
Researchers have developed insulin-producing cells that can be implanted in the body and triggered with a smartphone.

The ‘closed-loop system’ relies on cells that have been genetically engineered to produce insulin when triggered by light. In tests in mice, the cells were implanted just beneath the skin along with specialized LEDs. A digital glucometer sends data on blood sugar levels to a paired smartphone and app, which in turn signals the LEDs to illuminate and trigger the cells to produce insulin as needed.
