Smartphone Powered Satellite

Smartphone Powered Satellite
Feb-27-13
The world’s first smartphone-powered satellite has been launched into orbit, complete with a selection of screams to see if they can actually be heard in space.

The satellite, called STRaND-1 for Surrey Training, Research, and Nanosatellite Demonstrator, is powered by the Google Nexus One smartphone. The phone’s computing power will be used to collect data, take pictures of Earth (and send them via Instagram?) and allow people to upload videos that will play in space. The phone features a GPS unit specifically designed for space, and the entire phone will be traveling into space mounted on one of the panels and peeping out through a porthole.

The STRaND also carries the Scream in Space app, which contains screams submitted to the project’s website. Videos of the screams will be played at various time to determine whether the phone’s onboard speaker picks up the sounds.
