An organic superacid able to repair the defects in monolayer semiconductors could drastically improve the quality of LED displays.

Monolayer superconductors have a very low light absorption and are able to flex and bend, which makes them ideal for use in flexible and transparent displays. However, their performance has been limited because the monolayer semiconductor is usually full of defects. (“Traditionally, the thinner the material, the more sensitive it is to defects,” says UC Berkeley professor Ali Javey.)

To remove those defect, the team used a method involving an organic superacid, which filled in the missing atoms on the material’s surface by giving away protons. The result was in a 100-fold increase in the material’s photoluminescence quantum yield, from one percent to one hundred percent.
