Designed for areas where gas masks are an unfortunate necessity, the Social Gas Mask from Zlil Lazarovich is made to be less scary to view.
In some countries under constant threat of chemical war, owning and wearing a gas mask is part of a family’s standard emergency routine. But, as Israeli designer Zlil Lazarovich recalls from her own childhood, traditional gas masks can be very disturbing to look at, and did little to help ease her fears.
To make the masks more friendly to view, Lazarovich widened the transparent view window, allowing the eyes, eyebrows and cheeks to show, and widened the mask to mimic the shape of a healthy, full face. The connectors are also smaller, and the mask itself is made of comfortable, white silicon.
