The tentacled PoseiDrone is made almost completely of soft materials, which allows it to reach into tight spaces to grab objects or repair equipment.
The robot's squishy body was made possible by the advances in 3D printing, which allowed for the creation of new molds to make stretchy prototypes. Made almost 90 percent soft materials, the PoseiDrone was designed based on the main features of an octopus: its ability to squeeze into tight spaces, its range of motion and its semi-autonomous arms. Although the design is still being researched, the developers envision the robot being used to repair underwater equipment, where its soft body would allow it to attach itself to the equipment without causing damage.
