An innovative new robotic fish could one day be exploring our deep ocean environment—or our bodies.
Developed by a team in China, the transparent, biometric fishbot can travel twice as fast as its counterparts, and could be used to safely explore underwater structures like shipwrecks and coral reefs. The bot can withstand extreme temperatures, and its transparent form makes it very difficult to see underwater—lessening the disturbance it causes. The bot also replaces the traditional motor with electrically actuated soft materials—in this case, a set of fins on the bot that will propel the device quickly through the water.
The team believes the fishbot could also be one day miniaturized, allowing it to travel through the body to deliver drugs or medical sensors.
