Soft Suction Device Inspired by the Octopus

Soft Suction Device Inspired by the Octopus
Jan-20-18
An artificial suction device inspired by the octopus could offer a new anchoring mechanism for drones and robots.

Developed by a team at the Royal College of Arts, the soft sucker is made up two different silicon materials—a hard element that contains the vacuum pressure and a softer element that can conform to various surfaces to create a seal. This newly designed stiffness-gradient structure, inspired by the octopus’s own suckers, works with a 4-core fiber-optic cable to plan the robot’s motion and monitor the anchor’s firmness.
