Solar-Powered Charcoal Foam Removes Oil from Water

Solar-Powered Charcoal Foam Removes Oil from Water
Mar-22-19
A simple and inexpensive method of removing oil in produced water could reduce both pollution and health risks around the world.

Developed by a team from Purdue University, the process relies on activated charcoal foam that is subjected to solar energy, which heats the foam enough to allow it to absorb petroleum. Almost all traces of the oil is filtered from the water—making it safe enough to drink—and as much as 95 percent of the absorbed oil can be recovered from the charcoal for reuse.
