Sound Shirt Turns Music into Vibrations

Sound Shirt Turns Music into Vibrations
Oct-19-16
The Sound Shirt from CuteCircuit was designed to let deaf people “feel” music via a system of carefully designed micro-actuators.

An evolution of the Hug Shirt (which lets users send hugs wirelessly), the Sound Shirt was commissioned by the German Orchestra Jungen Symphoniker Hamburg to allow their patrons to feel the orchestra’s music. The shirt works in conjunction with a computer system and an array of microphones placed in strategic places on the stage, which pick up the sounds of the different instruments. The actuators in the shirt will vibrate in real time along with the music, with the deep notes activating the lower actuators while the higher notes are felt higher up on the body.

According to CuteCircuit CEO Ryan Genz, “We mapped intuitively how we thought the music would map to the body,” which allows the participant to interpret the music more accurately and completely.
