SoundBender Levitation System Bends Around Barriers

SoundBender Levitation System Bends Around Barriers
Oct-17-18
The hybrid SoundBender system bends sound waves around an obstacle to levitate an object above it.

Developed by a team from the University of Sussex, the SoundBender consists of a hybrid system of phased arrays of transducers (PATs) positioned beneath a circular metamaterial. As the PATs emit pulses of directed ultrasound waves, the metamaterial guides the sound waves around the obstacle to create a ‘hollow’ space that can levitate small objects.

According to the team, the hybrid technology could also be used to create haptic feedback or manipulate particle clouds, such as smoke or fog, to create holograms.
