The Spartan fire hydrant improves upon traditional hydrants with its rust-proof, tamper-proof and maintenance-free design.
Created by a 15-year New York City firefighter, the Sigelock Spartan eschews the traditional cast iron in favor of a mixture of stainless steel and ductile iron that has been coated with a powder that prevents rust. The internal parts of the hydrant have been re-designed to prevent the water from pooling and freezing during the winter (one of the primary causes of damage), and its working parts are encased in a locking mechanism that can only be opened with a pair of specially-designed tools.
The Spartan hydrant is currently being tested in eleven different states, and is the first and only hydrant to be verified as tamper-resistant under the new UL "264B" certification.
