Spokefuge Bicycle-Powered Centrifuge

Spokefuge Bicycle-Powered Centrifuge
Oct-18-14
Designed for use in rural, developing countries, the Spokefuge is a low-tech centrifuge that can be operated by a bicycle.

Blood samples must be spun and separated in order to be used for diagnosis, which can be difficult to accomplish in off-the-grid areas like Africa. The Spokefuge, designed by Jack Trew, can be operated by a device common to most rural areas—the bicycle. After the blood samples have been collected, they are placed inside the Spokefuge's specially-designed tubes, which are then attached to the bike's spokes. About ten minutes of riding is all that is needed to separate the samples.

The Spokefuge has been short-listed for the James Dyson Awards.
