Squid-Inspired Stickers Could Provide Night-Vision Camouflage

Squid-Inspired Stickers Could Provide Night-Vision Camouflage
Mar-28-15
Researchers have developed stickers inspired by squid skin that could eventually make soldiers invisible to infrared light.

To create the infrared cloak, the team isolated the protein platelet reflectin, which will reflect light differently based on its spacing and thickness, and layered the platelets to reflect specific wavelengths of light. After initial tests on a rigid surface, the team applied the film to flexible polymer sheets that can be adhered to a wide range of surfaces. The sheets activate when stretched, reflecting near-infrared as well as visible light. The team is currently researching ways to make the material invisible to more wavelengths of light.
