A stroke-detecting app could help an individual recognize if they have just had a stroke, ensuring prompt treatment.
Developed by a team at the Polytechnic University in Valencia and still in the testing phase, the app identifies if the user has suffered a stroke by asking the person to perform three tasks: smile, repeat a simple sentence, and lift both arms. Using the smartphone’s camera, microphone and built-in accelerometer, the app can detect if the person’s smile or speech are affected or if they cannot lift both arms to an equal height—all common signs of a stroke. If a stroke is identified, the app will automatically send an alert to chosen contacts and emergency services.
