A paper-based Zika test powered by gold nanoparticles could offer an affordable diagnostic tool for rural or developing areas.
The test, from a team at Washington University, is made up of small paper squares that have been embedded with gold nanoparticles. A protein that reacts with the immunoglobulins in patients infected with Zika is attached to the nanoparticles, safely wrapped in a crystal material that will wash away when exposed to water in a drop of blood. This crystal wrapping helps keep the proteins intact in a hot and humid environment without the need for refrigeration.
The team believes the paper-based test could also be adapted to diagnose other infectious diseases.
