Germany's surPLUShome has won this year's Solar Decathlon with its ability to produce more than twice the amount of energy it needs.

The surPLUShome is a two-story cube covered with a 11.1 kW PV system with panels on the roof (single-crystal silicon), sides, and front (thin-film copper indium gallium diselenide).

Other important design features include custom-made vacuum insulation structural panels, a boiler/heat pump system that provides hot water and warmth, and automatic louver-covered windows.

I wonder how much did this building cost?

Can the extra energy be converted and fed back to the grid? What would be the efficiency of conversion? How much money would it earn per annum and what would be the payback period if this house is considered as a mini power project?

It's good to get young people involved in these problems but unfortunately I can't see this type of house being seriously considered by any Country in the near future! Governments should by any sensible means possible, with grants and loans etc. encourage people to insulate their homes to a certain standard or face fines for not doing so! Think of the immediate benefits!
