Synthetic Platelets Speed Wound Healing

Synthetic Platelets Speed Wound Healing
Nov-16-14
By mimicking the body's own blood-clotting mechanism, researchers have created synthetic platelets able to accelerate the natural healing process while also opening the door to personalized treatment options.

In the case of a severe injury or when treating a patient whose blood coagulation system is impaired, the synthetic platelet-like nanoparticles (PLNs) can be added to the blood flow to help augment the patient's own natural platelets. They were designed to have the same shape and texture as the body's own natural platelets, which causes them to travel to the site of the injury and then remain there. Once in place, the synthetic platelets can attract other platelets to the wound site, encouraging coagulation.
