A new device that allows for communication through tactile interaction could help to bring a new level of independence to people with special needs—including those with autism.
Industrial designer Jeffery Brown developed the device based on his idea that all good designs are driven by people's experiences. The communication board features six cubes covered in different textures and linked to a sound recording. When the user squeezes a cube, the recording will play and alert the caregiver to the person's needs. The cubes' textures can be personalized based on preferences—which is an important detail, since many autistic people are driven by their specific likes and dislikes. In fact, it is this understanding of the users' needs that enables the design to work so well.
