TellSpec Identifies Ingredients in Food
Dec-25-13
The TellSpec handheld food scanner pairs with a smartphone to let users quickly identify the ingredients in their foods, making it easier to avoid allergens, chemicals or unwanted additives.

Designed to allow users to make smarter food choices, the device uses a Raman spectrometer, specialized cloud-based algorithm and a smartphone app. Beaming the low-powered laser at the food product in question will cause the food to emit low energy protons, which are then sorted by wavelength and analyzed to determine the food’s chemical makeup. The date is processed and interpreted with the help of a cloud-based database, and the results sent to the user’s smartphone.

According to the developer, the TellSpec can correctly identify ingredients 97.7 percent of the time. The device has already far surpassed its funding goal in Indiegogo.
