Terrestrial Return Vehicle Gives ISS Same Day Delivery to Earth

Oct-23-14 The TRV system was designed to offer a new means of transporting cargo from the ISS back to Earth without needing to hitch a ride on the few-times-a-year cargo and crew ferry crafts.

Developed by Intuitive Machines, the Terrestrial Return Vehicle is able to provide same-day-delivery of small samples from the ISS, which is ideal for samples that are perishable or critical to research. The TRV system is stored in the habitable area of the ISS until needed. Once loaded, the TRV is placed in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) airlock and then extracted and deployed by the JEM Robotic Manipulator System. The TRV's onboard propulsion and flight control systems allow it to execute a controlled descent and landing, and its superior lift-to-drag ratio enables more landing opportunities than conventional capsules.
