The Heliofloat Offers Sea-Borne Solar Panels

The Heliofloat Offers Sea-Borne Solar Panels
Apr-26-16
The Heliofloat would send solar panels out to sea on ultra-sturdy platforms that can survive even the roughest seas.

Developed at TU Wein, the Heliofloat floating platforms are made up of an array of flexible, downward-facing barrels that are open on one side to the sea below. Air trapped in the barrels enables them to float, while the open section of the barrel eliminates the closed air cushion that would cause the platform to rock on waves, and instead acts a sort of shock absorber. The result is a floating platform the size of a football field that can support the panels safely even in the heaviest seas.
