Thin-Film Technique Delivers a Steady Drug Release

A new thin-film drug-delivery technique could enable medications to be released directly into targeted locations in the body for up to 14 months—drastically altering the way we traditionally treat pain.

The technique, developed by a team at MIT, makes use of biodegradable, thin-films that have been loaded with drug molecules using a "layer-by-layer" method. This layer method allows the drug to be released steadily and for a longer period of time than previous methods, and the amount of drug being released can be adjusted by adding more layers of the coating.

The film can either be applied to nanoparticles for injection or used to coat permanent implants, such as orthopedic devices. The team also believes the drug delivery method could have applications beyond chronic pain sufferers, such as treating tuberculosis or other conditions that require extended drug therapy.
